To My Friend

I step over your pretty shoes
And pause as though
To step over half a lifetime,
Tread and thread together –
Fond remembrances,
Speckled here and there
(Perhaps a little everywhere)
With bittersweet sorrows.
That we were friends;
Oh, friendship!
Can we still have our full?
What worked and didn’t
God knows we tried,
And tried each other
Like favorite jeans
That shrunk as life grew large,
Or stretched.
But friendship wears
If friends will it to.
And friends do.
I do.
Do you?
